Value Design moved 75 Azure resources to a new tenant and gained a scalable, centrally monitored, and disaster-ready environment while maintaining application functionality and minimizing production disruption
Customer Overview
Value Design used Microsoft Azure to support its applications and daily operations. However, its existing environment relied on older services and manual processes that limited scalability, monitoring, governance, and disaster recovery readiness.
The organization needed to migrate its infrastructure to a new Azure tenant without disrupting application functionality. It also aimed to modernize legacy components, strengthen security controls, introduce automated scaling, and build disaster recovery capabilities into the environment.
The Challenge
Value Design needed to move 75 Azure resources from one tenant to another. Because the resources could not be transferred directly between tenants, the infrastructure had to be recreated in the target tenant while preserving the behavior of the existing applications.
The previous environment relied on manually managed virtual machines and an Azure Load Balancer (Basic SKU). It lacked automatic scaling, centralized monitoring, consistent security controls, standardized resource tags, and a disaster recovery strategy. As a result, a regional failure could have caused extended downtime.
Protecting workloads on Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets added further complexity, because each new scale set instance needed disaster recovery protection as the environment grew. The project required initial configuration combined with repeatable automation, along with a low-risk path to production cutover.
Our Approach
Assessment and Phased Migration
IFI Techsolutions assessed the existing Azure environment, documented dependencies, and planned how to recreate all 75 resources in the target tenant. Because the virtual machines could not be moved directly, the team took snapshots of the operating system and data disks, copied them to the target tenant, and rebuilt the virtual machines from them.
To reduce risk, the team moved the development environment first and validated application functionality before the production cutover. While production was being moved, the team routed traffic through Azure Load Balancer and Azure Application Gateway to minimize disruption.
Architecture Modernization
The team replaced manually managed virtual machines with Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets, deployed from standardized images in Azure Compute Gallery, to support automatic scaling and high availability. Azure Application Gateway managed application traffic and secured inbound access.
Separate virtual networks isolated the production, development, and disaster recovery environments. Network Security Groups controlled traffic, and Azure role-based access control enforced least privilege of access. Azure Monitor and Log Analytics added centralized monitoring, while mandatory tags for environment, cost center, owner, and application made ownership and costs easier to track.
Disaster Recovery Automation
The team set up disaster recovery using a Recovery Services vault and Azure Site Recovery. It first enabled protection for one scale set instance through the Azure portal, which created the recovery fabric, protection container, and replication policies.
An Azure Automation account with PowerShell runbooks then detected new scale set instances and enabled replication for them automatically. This kept disaster recovery coverage in place as the environment grew, without manual onboarding for each new instance.
Key Outcomes
75 Azure Resources Recreated in the New Tenant
All 75 Azure resources were recreated in the target tenant, and the virtual machines were rebuilt from copied operating system and data disks. Application functionality was maintained in the environment.
Automated Scaling and Standardized Deployment
Virtual Machine Scale Sets introduced automatic scaling and reduced reliance on manually managed virtual machines. Standardized images made deployment more consistent and repeatable.Disaster Recovery Readiness
Value Design now has disaster recovery capabilities that the previous environment did not have. Automated runbooks extend replication to new scale set instances as they are created.
Centralized Monitoring
Azure Monitor and Log Analytics give the organization a single view of infrastructure health and operations.
Stronger Security and Governance
Network isolation, least-privilege access, and mandatory resource tags strengthened control across the new tenant and made ownership and cloud costs clearer
Reduced Production Risk
Validating the development environment before the production cutover, along with controlled traffic routing, helped maintain application functionality and minimize downtime.
Looking Ahead
Value Design now has a scalable, resilient, and easier-to-manage Azure environment with automated scaling, centralized monitoring, structured governance, and disaster recovery.
By replacing manual processes with standardized deployment and automation, IFI Techsolutions gave the organization a stronger foundation for ongoing operations. New virtual machine instances can now be deployed consistently and protected automatically as the environment grows.
