About the Organization
MD Synergy Solutions, LLC provides cloud-based healthcare technology for medical practices. Its solutions include electronic health records, practice management, patient engagement, telemedicine, and medical billing capabilities.
The organization relies on Microsoft Azure to support its applications and business operations. Over time, legacy configurations and older Azure services created the need for a more secure, scalable, and reliable cloud environment.
Challenge
MD Synergy Solutions’ existing Azure environment included legacy configurations, Basic SKU resources, unmanaged disks, and limited standardization across key Azure services. These conditions increased operational risk and made the environment more difficult to secure, manage, and scale.
The client needed to address several challenges:
- Legacy and Basic SKU Azure resources
- Security gaps, including outdated TLS settings
- Limited standardization and governance
- Scalability limitations
- Dependence on unmanaged disks and older architectures
- Outbound connectivity and networking issues
- The need to modernize SQL workloads
The project also presented several technical challenges:
- Compatibility concerns between existing .NET Framework applications and Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Application access issues after TLS 1.2 were enforced
- Public IP upgrade limitations caused by VPN Gateway dependencies
- Outbound connectivity issues during the Load Balancer migration
- Downtime risks associated with the Managed Disk migration
- Capacity and performance considerations for Azure SQL Managed Instance
Solution
IFI Techsolutions planned and implemented an Azure infrastructure modernization program to strengthen security, improve reliability, and simplify ongoing management.
The solution included:
- Enforcing TLS 1.2 or later across Azure Storage Accounts
- Implementing Azure NAT Gateway for controlled outbound connectivity
- Upgrading eligible Basic SKU resources to Standard SKU
- Migrating unmanaged disks to Azure Managed Disks
- Modernizing database workloads with Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Strengthening network security with Network Security Groups and Role-Based Access Control
- Enabling monitoring and visibility through Azure Monitor and Log Analytics
IFI Techsolutions also followed a controlled implementation approach to reduce disruption and address technical dependencies.
The team:
- Tested .NET Framework applications for compatibility with Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Updated application packages to support TLS 1.2
- Planned phased upgrades where direct migration was not supported
- Configured and validated outbound connectivity for backend virtual machines
- Scheduled approved maintenance windows for changes requiring restarts
- Completed backups and snapshots before critical changes
- Documented rollback procedures for remediation activities
- Monitored the environment after each major change
The Public IP upgrade for components affected by existing Point-to-Site and Site-to-Site VPN Gateway dependencies was deferred. The customer was informed of the platform limitation and provided with guidance for future migration planning.
Architecture Overview
The modernized Azure architecture included:
- Azure Storage Accounts secured with TLS 1.2
- Azure NAT Gateway for controlled outbound connectivity
- Standard SKU networking resources where migration was supported
- Standard Azure Load Balancer
- Azure Managed Disks
- Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Azure Virtual Network with subnet segmentation
- Network Security Groups
- Role-Based Access Control
- Azure Monitor and Log Analytics
The architecture was designed in line with Azure Cloud Adoption Framework principles and the five pillars of the Azure Well-Architected Framework: Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Operational Excellence.
Impact
The modernization program improved the security, reliability, scalability, and manageability of the Azure environment.
- TLS 1.2 strengthened the security of connections to Azure Storage Accounts.
- Network Security Groups and Role-Based Access Control improved access and network protection.
- Modern security controls reduced risks associated with legacy configurations.
Reliability
- Standardized Azure services created a more stable and predictable environment.
- Compatibility testing and post-change validation reduced the risk of service disruption.
- Backups, snapshots, and rollback procedures supported safer infrastructure changes.
Scalability
- Managed Azure services provided a stronger foundation for future requirements.
- Azure SQL Managed Instance supported the modernization of database workloads.
- Standardized networking made the environment easier to expand and manage.
Operational Efficiency
- Azure Managed Disks simplified disk management.
- Centralized monitoring improved visibility into infrastructure health.
- Managed services reduced the operational effort associated with maintaining legacy components.
Governance
- Standardized services and access controls improved governance across the Azure environment.
- Approved maintenance windows and documented rollback procedures created a more controlled change process.
- Alignment with Azure architecture frameworks established a clearer foundation for future modernization.
Conclusion
The Azure infrastructure modernization program helped MD Synergy Solutions move toward a more secure, scalable, and well-governed cloud environment.
IFI Techsolutions addressed legacy configurations, strengthened storage and network security, modernized disk and database services, and introduced improved monitoring and access controls. The team also managed technical dependencies through compatibility testing, phased migration planning, backups, maintenance windows, and rollback procedures.
The resulting Azure environment provides greater operational stability, stronger governance, and a more reliable foundation for future business and technology requirements.
